‘Black lives matter’

by Max Cooper November 26, 2014

Last night, hundreds gathered in downtown to protest the Ferguson grand jury decision. Here are images from photographer Max Cooper of that protest and vigil.

Last night, a quickly organized rally saw hundreds gather in downtown Asheville to protest a grand jury’s decision not to indict Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson for shooting of unarmed teenager Mike Brown. The decision has set off national protests and criticism of the grand jury proceedings and decision as well as a lack of accountability when white police officers shoot African-Americans. Attendees held signs protesting police brutality (and in a few cases, the police’s existence itself) and referencing those killed by law enforcement, including the 2013 shooting of A.J. Marion by an Asheville police officer. Speakers focused on the lack of justice they see, a daily fear for their lives and Asheville’s continuing segregation.

Police presence at the peaceful gathering and vigil was minimal. Blade contributor Max Cooper captured these images.
