Hello, Blade readers. I want to thank you all for your patience this past week. As many of you know, we had an intense month in June, celebrating the Blade’s second anniversary and releasing an array of investigations, coverage, perspectives and more.
That involved an unusually intense work pace even by our usual exacting standards, and it took a toll. On Wednesday, just after covering a meeting of the Citizens Police Advisory Committee where the public raised questions and concerns about the recent killing of Jai Williams by an Asheville Police Department officer (you can read a round-up of our live coverage of that meeting here), I started to have sharp pains in my back. I’ve tried to avoid placing further strain on it since, but in the days afterwards it became clear that I would need to be careful or risk further damage.
This also coincides with a trip out of town to see a family member who’s faced some recent health challenges. All that combined delays some of the coverage we’d planned. I’ve continued to work via email and phone as much as possible, and continue to proceed on our upcoming pieces as quickly as I can while still taking care of my health and well-being.
Thank you, as always, for your support and understanding. When I mentioned these events earlier on social media, our readers responded with the concern and compassion that reminds me of why I love this city. I look forward to our coverage resuming shortly.
Sincerely,
David Forbes
